These accounts come directly from our home-visit records. We share them with care and consent, to honour each elder's dignity while showing why our work cannot wait.
A note on these stories: names, ages, and villages are real, drawn from documented home visits across Samburu East. We intentionally do not publish distressing photographs of individuals alongside their stories — their dignity matters as much to us as their need.
Lemoru Leramato
Age 75
A widower with an adopted son, Lemoru fell and injured both knees and now cannot walk unaided. His Inua Jamii support stopped after a false report of his death, and his wheelchair is faulty. He currently has no one to care for him.
Mpanisan Lekwale
Age ~85
Partially blind and living with a fractured hand from a fall, Mpanisan is excluded from the Inua Jamii programme because of an ID registration error, and relies on her late husband's ID to access support.
Nkuleni Lolokile
Age Elderly
Living with eye problems and joint pain, Nkuleni is registered for government support, but the funds never reach her because a family member holds her ID.
Supalian Lekangu
Age 76
Supalian lives in a small structure on unfenced land. Her daughters depend on charcoal burning, an unreliable income that leaves her daily meals uncertain.
Letain Lekonjo Lekonirai
Age Elderly
Blind and largely confined indoors, Letain shows signs of starvation. His sons left school due to poverty, and he is often left without anyone to assist him.
Ntele Lesuyai
Age 84
Recently discharged from hospital, Ntele lives with a son who could not complete school due to poverty. Food security remains her biggest daily struggle.
Mzee Taamare Lemojong
Age ~100–105
One of fewer than ten surviving members of the Lkimaniki age-group in Samburu East, Mzee Lemojong helped pioneer the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in his younger years.
Nandeo Lendeloni
Age 77
A widow who has lost most of her children, Nandeo cannot walk and now cares for a grandson living with autism, with little support of her own.
Sitayo Lendorop
Age 97
Blind and largely alone while relatives search for food, Sitayo has no guaranteed source of livelihood.
Lepolia Leguuto & Sapiyon Leguuto
Age 99 & 94
This elderly couple depend entirely on well-wishers for survival. Sapiyon is blind and hard of hearing; Lepolia helps her walk each day from their modest home.
Mama Lima
Age 87
Once a renowned traditional midwife, Mama Lima suffered a stroke and now lies mostly unattended while relatives search for daily needs — entirely dependent on human support.
Sakailen Lekonirai
Age ~100+
Believed to be the last living member of the ilmirisho age-group, Sakailen has lost most of her sight and is confined to her compound.
